This magnificent Canaletto sold at Sotheby's was in an incongruous Baroque 17th century frame (above) that was clearly an out-of-period mismatch. The picture needed an authentic contemporary setting.
The art dealer who was the successful bidder commissioned us to create a scaled down reproduction of a rare Venetian 18th century frame in our collection. Images of the carving and gilding appear by rotation on the "Reproduction Frames" page and below.
The completed hand carved and gilded frame with its strapwork, leaves, flowers and dentil inner edge epitomizes the lightness and delicacy of 18th century decoration, echoing the wealth of detail depicted by Canaletto. The painting was subsequently acquired by The J. Paul Getty Museum, L.A.
